It is a little known historical fact that reggae superstar Bob Marley and part of his family live in Delaware. Not only that, but they run Tuff Gong clothing . On his website it points out that: Bob's mother, Cedella, had remarried and moved to Delaware in the United States where she had saved sufficient money to send her son an air ticket. The intention was for Bob to start a new life. But before he moved to America, Bob met a young girl called Rita Anderson and, on February 10, 1966, they were married. Marley's stay in America was short-lived. He worked just enough to finance his real ambition: music. In October 1966 Bob Marley, after eight months in America, returned to Jamaica. I love rivers. They are the most beautiful and interesting places I know of, from the Huang Pu or riding along a Khlong speedboat inside of Bangkok, to the Jelab in India or the Ganges at Varanasi. Rivers are time in motion, they never stop moving or changing; not even for a second, but they capture the life of a land and its people. Rivers always take you where you need to go, as long as you go by boat. This is the Huang Pu River in Shanghai. It flows on its own surrounded by a highly developed and sophisticated city where you can buy anything you want. Though as a libertarian I do not advocate violence, or any type of fighting, I understand this is sometimes necessary to protect those without a protector from the cruel and vicious: This is your weekend watching to learn about the natural order. The Lesson: Get you act together and create a better tomorrow by teaching both tolerance and virtue. You do not need to be perfect to be good, but you have to have virtue to strive for what is good. Inspiration comes from many places. A smile in the street, a car with an extra wheel hanger, an old gnarled man who looks at you with hazy eyes, but more than anywhere else, it comes from the loneliness inside of each of us. The natural world then becomes its mirror and we reflect ourselves in it, and see it reflected inside of us. As unique and as individual as we are, so too the world around us. Delaware is beautiful, the flat long stretches of open space remind me of the solitude we all have, from its marshes to the snow geese running to eat food, to the muskrat burrows that steam in winter, the otters playful dance along route 9. Houses like wasps nests clinging to the sides of the roads. This morning a cardinal landed on my window, next to the apple tree, it sang for a moment and lighted slowly moving in the air as if time was no longer itself but transformed into just that moment and that song. Reflected in the water and tangled in the roots of a cypress, I need fresh air to breathe. We protect ourselves from the one thing we cannot stand to see, our self until everything is so hidden there is nothing left to hide. In an interesting book called Dr. Bowlder's Legacy, author Nick Parrin makes the case that the one 19th century social historian expunged much of the reality of American political life. So like a Greek temple, now whitewashed that has lost all its color so too has the American social tapestry. I think if Franklin was here and in charge we would be having more sex in the healthy way with our wives and and if single with our friends and a as a result a lot more happy in our business without the social preoccupations of a post-modern straight-laced Victorianism. We would also court and develop virtue in the things that matter and eventually so much of our popular culture would no longer be preoccupied with sex in general. McMansions do not just create environmental and socially problems, they are also ugly. Plasma screens and home theatre systems are crass.
