A reminder as the gloves come off in the Delaware blogosphere...

Quoted at Thoughts on Freedom:

‘What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist’, Salman Rushdie.

But the corollary to this credo would be...

Those who exercise the right to offend lose the right to thin-skinned whining.

Thus here.

Outing somebody's pen name is a pretty serious step, because there can be a lot of legitimate reasons for using one.

On the other hand, regarding those who blog under their own names (and therefore accept direct accountability for what they publish), there probably is a limit to the number of times some people are willing to read juvenile name-calling because they happen to disagree with policy positions.

Oh. Yeah:

I just posted at DP. John was wrong to use donviti's real name. I don't care how big of tools the DLers are, as you said Steve, there are legitimate reasons for using a pseudonym. Calling people names on blogs, acting like assholes constantly, using lousy spelling(!) ... none of that necessitates such a revelation.

I heard a while back that the writers at DL decided to stop commenting on my blog because they wanted to be the sole source of serious progressive analysis in DE. That they wanted to see me leave the blogosphere. That was a rumor, but it was followed by an absence of any of them commenting on DW.

They are cutthroat over there. I wish them no ill, but I frankly want nothing more to do w/ them.

Dana! Love the avatar, man! :-)

Yeah, I saw that donviti was bragging about how all the insiders, politicos and the News Journal all keep up with DL. Which, if true (which I doubt), bodes not very well for the state of intellectual discourse. Just about every other DE blog possesses more intellectual rigor and better writing/grammar than DL, yours and this one being tops in my book.

But hey, it actually makes sense, 'tho. I read way back when that the NJ was written at a 6th grade level. Thus, it and DL are made for each other.

That was some bullshit.

Highly informative opinion.

Can I guess your source? Liz or Nancy?

I can say with 100% accuracy on my part, I don't read you b/c well, I don't read you. Other than that I know of no "plot" to stop going to you bro.

Honestly Dana, you are way off base on this one. WAY off base.

now to the original point. If you come to DL with stupidity, you will be slammed for it. Bring the talking points and be prepared to be called an idiot etc.

It's not about having thin skin, it's about not being able to take the retaliation.

We are like Israel, we use excessive force to defend ourselves. if you don't like it complain to the united nations about it

I can't improve on what donviti said. There is no plot.

BTW - this will come as no surprise to Hube, but I blame George Bush for poisoning the well of American discourse.

It is not enough to simply disagree with Republicans and point to evidence that they were worng about everything for 8 years.

You almost have to call them goatf*ckers once in a while because that is all they understand. Evidence and counter arguments and facts and rationality is so much liberal blah blah blah to them.

You guys always do so well in proving my point (in this case, my 9:42). Thanks!

Just calling it as I see it Hube. It is a free country.

If that were actually true, it would be fine.

Sadly, the issue is often not talking points but simply different opinions.

"Republicans are un-American" (and I'm not even one) is not even a talking point. It's not even meant to be funny, or to be hyperbole any more, it's just a fairly pathetic attempt to echo what jason perceives as the GOP tactics of the past 8 years.

They worked so well, apparently, that you all decided you cannot beat the gestapo without putting on brown shirts....

Steve. They'll never get it. Always remember: This is the blog where one of its confabbers called for "all Republicans to be rounded up and shot" because they are such a "threat."

And Jason says it's a free country? Not if they ever got their way ...

I only read DL when Steve links them. It's a black hole of rationality. No rational thought can achieve escape velocity and be freed.

funny coming from a libertarian

How precisely does Bowly's comment infringe on libertarianism?

Again, you make his point perfectly.

Hube, will you please cease about Delaware Dem's hyperbole and Jason330's money. It gets tiring after awhile.

Give me a break, nemski.

Calling Dave Burris "a fatass piece of human garbage" and anybody who doesn't agree with the current stimulus package "un-American" is the height of wit?

You can do and say what you want, but by doing so you pretty much forfeit the right to criticize other people for reacting in kind.

It's downright ridiculous for the people who invented "attack dog Democrat mode" to start whining about other people dissing them.

What Steve said, nemski. And I'll add: Get a fucking clue.
Great man,

really informative...

Comment Rescue (?) and child-related gun violence in Delaware

In my post about the idiotic over-reaction to a New Jersey 10-year-old posing with his new squirrel rifle , Dana Garrett left me this response: One waits, apparently in vain, for you to post the annual rates of children who either shoot themselves or someone else with a gun. But then you Libertarians are notoriously ambivalent to and silent about data and facts and would rather talk abstract principles and fear monger (like the government will confiscate your guns). It doesn't require any degree of subtlety to see why you are data and fact adverse. The facts indicate we have a crisis with gun violence and accidents in the USA, and Libertarians offer nothing credible to address it. Lives, even the lives of children, get sacrificed to the fetishism of liberty. That's intellectual cowardice. OK, Dana, let's talk facts. According to the Children's Defense Fund , which is itself only querying the CDCP data base, fewer than 10 children/teens were killed per year in Delaw

With apologies to Hube: dopey WNJ comments of the week

(Well, Hube, at least I'm pulling out Facebook comments and not poaching on your preserve in the Letters.) You will all remember the case this week of the photo of the young man posing with the .22LR squirrel rifle that his Dad got him for his birthday with resulted in Family Services and the local police attempting to search his house.  The story itself is a travesty since neither the father nor the boy had done anything remotely illegal (and check out the picture for how careful the son is being not to have his finger inside the trigger guard when the photo was taken). But the incident is chiefly important for revealing in the Comments Section--within Delaware--the fact that many backers of "common sense gun laws" really do have the elimination of 2nd Amendment rights and eventual outright confiscation of all privately held firearms as their objective: Let's run that by again: Elliot Jacobson says, This instance is not a case of a father bonding with h

The Obligatory Libertarian Tax Day Post

The most disturbing factoid that I learned on Tax Day was that the average American must now spend a full twenty-four hours filling out tax forms. That's three work days. Or, think of it this way: if you had to put in two hours per night after dinner to finish your taxes, that's two weeks (with Sundays off). I saw a talking head economics professor on some Philly TV channel pontificating about how Americans procrastinate. He was laughing. The IRS guy they interviewed actually said, "Tick, tick, tick." You have to wonder if Governor Ruth Ann Minner and her cohorts put in twenty-four hours pondering whether or not to give Kraft Foods $708,000 of our State taxes while demanding that school districts return $8-10 million each?
