American Militarism: Iran

Well it finally looks like we are prepared to invade Iran in April- At least Paul Craig Roberts thinks so. I hope he is not correct.

The Russian News Agency Novosti, reported that there could be an invasion of Iran, a year later than it is was first reported.

And in addition the Russians noted that:

TEHRAN, March 28 (RIA Novosti) - Iran's Foreign Ministry rejected on Friday the U.S. president's claim that Tehran sponsors terrorist groups in Iraq, and said the ongoing turmoil in the country is due only to the occupation.

U.S. President George W. Bush, who has consistently accused Tehran of attempting to destabilize the situation in Iraq, said on Thursday that insurgents in Basra, which has been caught up in a new surge of violence, "received arms and training and funding from Iran."

Spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said: "Such allegations are groundless and boring, merely repeating the position of the occupiers' government. The U.S. president's remarks are an attempt to flee from reality in Iraq, which, unfortunately, U.S. politicians are not prepared to face up to."

The occupation "has destabilized the situation in the country and caused the suffering of the Iraqi people," Hosseini said.

Violence has continued unabated in Iraq in the five years since the formal end of the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. Over 100 people have been killed in the past three weeks in a series of bomb and mortar attacks throughout the country. The death toll among U.S. troops now stands at 4,000.

Given this context and to lend credence to Paul Roberts' theory, was a series of discussions from an insider at Empire Burlesque was a March 22nd article in Okaz the Saudi State media that noted:

Last Friday, Dick Cheney was in Saudi Arabia for high-level meetings with the Saudi king and his ministers. On Saturday, it was revealed that the Saudi Shura Council -- the elite group that implements the decisions of the autocratic inner circle -- is preparing "national plans to deal with any sudden nuclear and radioactive hazards that may affect the kingdom following experts' warnings of possible attacks on Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactors," one of the kingdom's leading newspapers, Okaz, reports. The German-based dpa news service relayed the paper's story.

None of this is particularly good news for the war weary people of this nation. In response, Russia has mobilized it's Navy and wants concessions that the Bushear reactor will not be hit or it will start a regional war. This is a very bad idea. But if you want World War III, it could be a good or at least a very funny thing for the people who plan to profit from it. That is for people who are crazy enough to think that this is a good way to make a buck.

I am sorry, I do not agree with socialism, I do not typically like mercantilism either and I believe in the American system and pan-Americanism, along Jeffersonian lines in the libertarian spirit- But, this is simply so far out of the realm of a normal response to the threat posed by Iran that I have to agree with the democratic-socialists and social democrats, as well as other libertarians around the world that:

"I seriously believe we have to start asking questions about his mental health," said Kucinich. "There's something wrong. He does not seem to understand his words have real impact." The democratic candidate who was speaking to the editorial board of The Philadelphia Inquirer on Tuesday added, "You cannot be a president of the United States who's wanton in his expression of violence." "There's a lot of people who need care. He might be one of them. If there isn't something wrong with him, then there's something wrong with us. This, to me, is a very serious question."

Kucinich, who is a US Congressman from Ohio, has proposed to impeach both Bush and his Vice President Dick Cheney.

Bush had claimed Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons, adding this may lead to World War III. His remarks drew fierce domestic and international criticism.

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez also condemned Bush's war rhetoric, saying he must be taken to a madhouse. Tehran has rejected Bush's allegations as baseless, insisting that its nuclear program is solely aimed at peaceful purposes. The UN nuclear watchdog, IAEA, has also confirmed there is no evidence to prove Iran is developing nuclear weaponry.

I just hope Joe Biden is prepared to keep his word to impeach if we are taken to war with a nation of 70 million people without constitutional and congressional authority:

Comment Rescue (?) and child-related gun violence in Delaware

In my post about the idiotic over-reaction to a New Jersey 10-year-old posing with his new squirrel rifle , Dana Garrett left me this response: One waits, apparently in vain, for you to post the annual rates of children who either shoot themselves or someone else with a gun. But then you Libertarians are notoriously ambivalent to and silent about data and facts and would rather talk abstract principles and fear monger (like the government will confiscate your guns). It doesn't require any degree of subtlety to see why you are data and fact adverse. The facts indicate we have a crisis with gun violence and accidents in the USA, and Libertarians offer nothing credible to address it. Lives, even the lives of children, get sacrificed to the fetishism of liberty. That's intellectual cowardice. OK, Dana, let's talk facts. According to the Children's Defense Fund , which is itself only querying the CDCP data base, fewer than 10 children/teens were killed per year in Delaw

With apologies to Hube: dopey WNJ comments of the week

(Well, Hube, at least I'm pulling out Facebook comments and not poaching on your preserve in the Letters.) You will all remember the case this week of the photo of the young man posing with the .22LR squirrel rifle that his Dad got him for his birthday with resulted in Family Services and the local police attempting to search his house.  The story itself is a travesty since neither the father nor the boy had done anything remotely illegal (and check out the picture for how careful the son is being not to have his finger inside the trigger guard when the photo was taken). But the incident is chiefly important for revealing in the Comments Section--within Delaware--the fact that many backers of "common sense gun laws" really do have the elimination of 2nd Amendment rights and eventual outright confiscation of all privately held firearms as their objective: Let's run that by again: Elliot Jacobson says, This instance is not a case of a father bonding with h

The Obligatory Libertarian Tax Day Post

The most disturbing factoid that I learned on Tax Day was that the average American must now spend a full twenty-four hours filling out tax forms. That's three work days. Or, think of it this way: if you had to put in two hours per night after dinner to finish your taxes, that's two weeks (with Sundays off). I saw a talking head economics professor on some Philly TV channel pontificating about how Americans procrastinate. He was laughing. The IRS guy they interviewed actually said, "Tick, tick, tick." You have to wonder if Governor Ruth Ann Minner and her cohorts put in twenty-four hours pondering whether or not to give Kraft Foods $708,000 of our State taxes while demanding that school districts return $8-10 million each?
